Sergey Karjakin ended a disappointing Sao Paulo leg with a draw against tournament underdog Paco Vallejo, while world champion Vishy Anand played his 5th draw against Magnus Carlsen.

The Chess Masters Final is a 6-player double round-robin event which is held half in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and half in Bilbao, Spain. The Bilbao leg is from 7-13 October.

The tournament uses the "Sofia" anti-draw rules, meaning that players can only draw by mutual agreement with the permission of the arbiter. The "Bilbao" scoring system (3-1-0) is also in operation.

All of the 1's are draws.

where does it say draw on the standings board

If the player refuses to accept draw, then you can draw by the 50 move rule [No pawn move or capture in 50 moves = draw]

So, in other words, they can just purposely do a 3 fold repetition and do a draw, making this a little pointless.

    The CLASSIC GM Draw:

It does say both players have to agree to the draw, which seems to contradict this.  Imagine if it came to this position and one of the players refused to accept the draw just to break the record for the longest chess game, or maybe because they're having a really bad day and are the uber jerk.

@ ClavierCavalier: The players can also draw by three fold repetition.

On the Anand vs. Carlsen game, what's the point of 57. Nd5 instead of 57. Kxf4?  Isn't it a forced draw, too?

What happens if the arbiter says no to the draw request?  What will make the players continue?

Thanks for writing this article. I have been following the tournament intently. Caruana has been playing well, yes, but I feel his success is, in part, due to the poor play of the other players, relative to their usual playing ability.

what do you mean? clearly he was right not to resign as he was able to draw the game...

What an arrogance not to resign in such a position. I hope his luck runs out in Bilbao.
