The Women's World Chess Team Championship 2013 is underway in Astana, Kazakhstan. The competition features 10 national teams, with 4 players plus a reserve for each team.

The format is a 9-round single round-robin event from 2-12 March at a time control of 40 moves in 90 minutes, then 30 minutes to finish with a 30 second increment from the start of the game.  Games start at 15:00 local time (GMT+6) and live coverage is available at the official website.

Previous winners China are without their top players Hou Yifan and Zhao Xue, while Russia don't have thew services of the Kosintseva sisters, Nadezhda and Tatiana, following a dispute with team coach Sergey Rublevsky.

As a result of these enforced changes, Russia and China are only seeded* 3rd and 4th respectively, leaving Ukraine as top seeds and Georgia 2nd.

"Another Kirsan space captain stunt; it is not a "world" competition if it has only 10 teams.

    Sigh."

However, all the invited teams except the host were qualified according their standing in the Olympiad (top 3 countries + the best of each continent) I think
On the other hand, Africa doesnt seem represented.

I only counted four players rated 2500+, out of 17 such women in the world according to the latest rating list.  That's kind of disappointing.  Still an interesting event, but the field could have been stronger than this, and I was hoping it would be.

Russia is playing without Kosintseva sisters. China is lacking Hou Yifan and Zhao Xue. India is missing Koneru, Dronavalli and Sachdev. France doesn't have Sebag. It is strange, actually. Not typical.

At first glance it seems strange that the top women players are not playing.  But I guess it is a good idea to give the second line a chance at international exposure.  All the best to the Indian team.

I guess this is not a big event like the Olympiads. Koneru Humpy, Tania Sachdev, Harika Dronavalli are all missing from the Indian squad.
