Wei Yi.jpgA 13-year old Chinese player Wei Yi (pictured) has qualified to become the youngest Grandmaster in the world!

Wei Yi is currently sharing the lead at the Reykjavik Open with a score of 6½/8, which is already a strong enough performance to earn his third and final GM norm.

Since Wei Yi's current rating is 2501 Elo, he has passed the minimum rating criteria of 2500.  His latest scalp was French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in round eight in Reykjavik (see below).

At 13 years, 8 months and 23 days old, Wei Yi is currently the youngest GM (elect) in the world, and the fourth youngest player ever to become a Grandmaster!

GM Wesley taught him a thing or 2 about endgame technique. Even though I am told that Wesley also didn't play as accurately as the position demanded. I would like to see Karpov's comments on that game, I am sure the great positional master would have a field day analysing this game and making corrections.

But give the kid some credit, he consistently beats 2300 rated players with black, and that's no mean feat. Consistency is important at this stage.

The penultimate round of Reykjavik Open, GM Wesley So of the Philippines played against GM Marci Dziuba. The Polish GM choose the Caro-Kann Defense and Wesley So demonstrated that he was very well prepared to face the opening. The game became exciting when the Filipino GM went for a Queen sacrifice in exchange of a rook and bishop. The position was very sharp and Wesley claimed a winning advantage with exchange sacrifice. A very nice sequence finished in checkmate on move 41. (source: Susan Polgar)

Nice article. Cool collection of games. Good call, elindauer.

In other news, I heard that a baby born today broke the record for youngest person. :-)

The word 'Current' helps immensely. Thank you for the great article and included games, SonOfPearl.

Wow what an amazing break in the Baklan game!  White is pressing for a win and suddenly blunders mate.  Ouch.

Great courage in the Lagrave game to go pawn grabbing on the queenside in the face of that attack.  It would be interesting to know how much of that was prep and how much was calculation OTB.

Reykjavik Open 2013 Feb 27, 2013 :  3-way tie for 1st place. GM Wesley So, Pavel Elajanov & Amin bassem. With draw with the black pieces against Eljanov on Top Board, Wesley So has offially crossed the 2700 mark. He is now the first Filipino and American college player to achieve this feat.

Since the original title of this article seemed to unintentionally mislead some members and confuse others, I've added "Current" on the front of it. Is that better? Smile I've also amended the article slightly.

Just to repeat, if anyone is still unclear...Wei Yi is the youngest GM in the world right now, and the fourth youngest person ever to be a GM.

He is only thirteen right now, The others have already grown older. For example GM So is already 19. Smile

I dont get how the title relates to the story... it says the yougest grandmaster record was broken, then the story claims he is the 4th youngest?
