GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden

Category 19 GM tournament: 7th–17th Feb 2013

For the first time ever, the Chess Center Baden-Baden (Schachzentrum Baden-Baden) will host a category 19 GM tournament, the GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden. This event will follow the tradition of great chess tournaments that the well-known southern German Spa town has established over the last two centuries.

Baden-Baden is also known in the chess world as the hometown of OSG Baden-Baden, the most successful German club in the 1990 and 2000s. In the same period we started the Chess Center Baden-Baden, to lay further foundations for establishing Baden-Baden as an important center of the European chess community.

The main event of our chess weeks will be the GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden, a super-tournament which will give the the three top German players the chance to face three established world class players on their own soil.

As partners of the GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden, we gained the Grenkeleasing AG, the German Chess Federation, and Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa.

The participants in the double round robin will be:

Viswanathan Anand  India  World Champion
Fabiano Caruana  Italy  World #5
Michael Adams  England  World #23
Arkadij Naiditsch  Germany  World #37
Daniel Fridman  Germany  World #78
Georg Meier  Germany  World #108

Rising star Fabiano Caruana will be the main challenger to Vishy Anand

The tournament is scheduled from February 7th to 17th 2013. The venue will be the historical halls of Kulturhaus LA8 (House of Culture) in the center of Baden-Baden. The games will start daily at 3 p.m., in the last round at 1 p.m.

To complement the main event, several side tournaments – each limited to 80 players – will take place:

  •     Chess Classic Elo Open (9 rounds, 9 days, only for players ELO 1800+) 7th–15th Feb 2013
  •     Chess Classic Fasching (6 rounds, 3 days, open to all) 9th–11th Feb 2013
  •     Chess Classic Ferien (6 rounds, 3 days, open to all) 14th–16th Feb 2013

@ mattjchessum - thanks, now corrected. I read that twice before posting and didn't even notice. This is an official press release, but I think it has been written by a non-native speaker, or translated from German.

Anand doesn't win games, so Caruana is the winner. It's a shame Naka was right, Caruana only goes to weak events, so he can gain rating.
